sharonmg > There are too many incursions into the sidewalks, with everything from utility and sign poles to shrubs and fences causing problems.
sharonmg > It wouldn't take much to make this intersection more appealing for pedestrians -- a marked crosswalk, and some landscaping in front of the business (planters, window boxes, perhaps a bench....)
sharonmg > This is the kind of streetscape that discourages walking -- gravel, weeds, Dumpster, fence that blocks any "eyes on the street" from the nearby building. The barbed wire is an extra disincentive.
sharonmg > This sidewalk is usable, but the aesthetics are so unappealing that few would actually want to walk here. Some trees would help.
sharonmg > Here's the view from the Fabric Place. In this quick snapshot with my pocket camera, you it's hard to see the big parking lot on the right and mostly big blank, windowless wall or parking lot across the street. But basically, there's not enough to encourage someone coming out of the Fabric Place to stroll down the street to other retail destinations.
sharonmg > A better part of the streetscape, on Concord Street.
sharonmg > This building provides some interest to the streetscape. Instead of just a plain flat facade, there's some variety as well as a little landscaping.
sharonmg > The old J.C. Penney building also provides interest for walkers, with a recessed entry-way.
sharonmg > A pedestrian crossing done right -- well-marked crosswalk, and landscaped island breaking up the multiple lanes of traffic.
